1.4436 Stainless Steel Composition & Enhanced Pitting Resistance

1.4436 (X3CrNiMo17-13-3) is a high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel grade specified under EN 10028-7 and EN 10088-2. With 16.5–18.5% chromium, 12.5–14.5% nickel, and 2.5–3% molybdenum, it offers significantly enhanced pitting resistance compared with the 316/316L family.
The increased nickel and molybdenum content ensures stable performance in chloride-rich environments, weak acids, and seawater conditions. The grade is suitable for chemical processing equipment, marine components, pump and valve parts, pressure vessels, and food-processing systems, particularly where higher corrosion resistance is required. It maintains good weldability and retains corrosion resistance after welding. 1.4436 is supplied as sheets, plates, strips, tubes, and bars. It is widely used in desalination systems, chemical reactors, pharmaceutical installations, and premium architectural components. As an upgraded version of the 316 family, it provides greater reliability in aggressive chloride environments.
