1.4401 Stainless Steel Composition & Corrosion-Resistant Properties

1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2) is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel grade specified under EN 10028-7 and EN 10088-2, equivalent to the widely used 316. Its composition includes 16.5–18.5% chromium, 10–13% nickel, and 2–2.5% molybdenum, providing significantly enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments compared with the 304 family. The grade performs reliably in seawater, salt spray, chemical media, and mildly aggressive acidic conditions.
It is commonly used in pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pump and valve components, food-processing equipment, and marine engineering structures. Its weldability is excellent, and corrosion resistance remains stable after welding, making it suitable for fabrication-intensive applications. 1.4401 is supplied as cold-rolled sheets, hot-rolled plates, strips, tubes, and bars. It is widely applied in chemical plants, pharmaceutical systems, marine components, architectural façades, and hygienic processing lines. As a corrosion-resistant upgrade to 304 stainless steel, 1.4401 provides dependable performance in demanding industrial environments.
