1.4404 Stainless Steel Composition & Corrosion-Resistant Properties
1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) is the low-carbon molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel grade specified under EN 10028-7 and EN 10088-2, equivalent to 316L. Its composition includes 16.5–18.5% chromium, 10–13% nickel, 2–2.5% molybdenum, and a carbon content below 0.03%, providing excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments.
Compared with 1.4401 (316), the reduced carbon content enhances resistance to intergranular corrosion in welded structures, making it suitable for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, marine components, and hygienic processing systems. It offers stable formability for deep drawing, bending, welding, and polishing operations. 1.4404 is supplied as sheets, plates, strips, tubes, and bars. It is widely used in chemical plants, pharmaceutical equipment, marine engineering, architectural façades, and high-purity systems. As a corrosion-resistant upgrade to the 304 family, 1.4404 delivers dependable performance in demanding industrial environments.
