ASTM A709 standard ASTM covers high strength, low allow structural steel available in shapes, plates, sheets and bars. A709 Gr.50W high strength steel sheets are widely used in bridges. A709 Gr.50W sheets and plates are characterized by atmospheric corrosion resistance. This property in most environments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition. ASTM A709 Gr.50W high strength low alloy steel plates wider than 24 in. [600 mm], the elongation requirement is reduced by two percentage points. A709 Gr.50W sheet elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm: 19 % for shapes with flange thickness over 3 in. [75 mm].
